8 Sharp Techniques To Improve Your Creative Writing Skills

Of course, there’s no magical formula that fits every single writer – what works for one is another’s nightmare. I also attempted to imitate writers such as Dave Eggers and Dan Kennedy, but soon realized that I wasn’t funny enough and gave it up. Over time, I eventually developed my own style, but reading the works of these writers and seeing how they constructed their essays and books was immensely helpful to me as a writer (see tip #3). The best writers are also keen readers, and reading on a regular basis is an easy way to start developing your writing skills. I don’t just mean blog posts, either – diversify your reading material. Expand your horizons to more challenging material than you typically read, and pay attention to sentence structure, word choice, and how the material flows.
The problem is, for most people, writing a novel isn’t that easy. So, how do you get the ideas from your head onto paper and into some kind of useable format?
One of my favorite parts of writing is giving unique voices to each character. I believe that’s what truly brings them to live. It can be a little scary to pull up a story you wrote last week or even two years ago and tear it apart. In order to improve your descriptions, you have to write them with a specific intention.

Don’t feel like you have to have your plot completely worked out before you start. In fact, many writers prefer to make up the story as they go along. Plotting is excellent if that’s how you roll, but it’s also perfectly acceptable to sit down and start writing with only a vague idea of what you’re going to write about.
After you have 4 emotional states, write one page of each using dialogue and narrative your character would use. Choose your 4 emotional states – and get creative. You can choose sadness, anger, happiness, and excitement BUT you can also go a bit further and choose to use drunk, flirty, terrified, and eager. Their dialogue as the power to pull readers in, or push them out of the book completely.
These writing exercises will help you accomplish that and improve your talent immensely. You need them in order to help the reader understand what the surroundings of the characters look like. It’s often seen as the opposite of journalistic or academic writing.

Creative writing is the art of using words to make things up. However, a good creative writer makes things up that people will want to read. To do this, you have to use your imagination and try to capture an emotion or a human truth, like love or loss.
Yes, remakes are also considered creative writing, however, most creative writers create their own plot formed by their own unique ideas. When I first started writing, I imitated some of my favorite nonfiction writers and essayists, such as Joan Didion, Truman Capote and Bill Bryson.
Your job as a writer is to make people feel how you want them to by telling them a story. Creative writers typically decide an emphasis in either fiction or poetry, and they usually start with short stories or simple poems. They then make a schedule based on this emphasis including literature classes, education classes and workshop classes to strengthen their skills and techniques. Creative Writing programs are typically available to writers from the high school level all the way through graduate school/university and adult education. Most Creative Writing degrees for undergraduates in college are Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees .

Not knowing the theme can often leave readers feeling unsatisfied – and rightfully so. To start, choose a scene you wrote previously that has little to no dialogue, but is still very important.
With my first novel,Beautiful Malice, I started with the first line,I didn’t go to Alice’s funeral,and took it from there. I had no idea who Alice was or what she’d done to the narrator. Writing the book was as much a journey of discovery for me as it was for the reader. Writing creatively requires a focused approach and broad understanding of the subject in order to create a larger picture for the reader to visualize. You should spend time researching and conducting informational interviews in order to gain this knowledge about the subject.
This does not include academic or technical writing because these types of writing cannot include made-up material nor are their purposes to express the writer’s feelings. However, it’s the entire goal of creative writing.
Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t create a masterpiece on your first attempt – chances are, you probably won’t, and that’s okay, too. Just get your ideas down on paper first, then go back and start cleaning up. Writing is an iterative process, and even the best writers have to spend a lot of time reworking material they were probably too embarrassed to show anybody. Being creative and “pretending” is part of being human. Why else would there be so many books, plays, movies, and songs?
Some continue to pursue a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, the terminal degree in the field. programs are becoming more prevalent in the field, as more writers attempt to bridge the gap between academic study and artistic pursuit.
